Why Depression comes with Winter πŸ˜”β„ {Bonus Photography!}

Β So, it’s pretty much officially Winter, and I thought this would be a good topic to discuss. Obviously, Winter means darkness, coldness and illness. When it dawns on us that there will be no more sun and summer for a while yet, we start getting grumpier and less bothered to do anything. We practically have no motivation left. (SO ME!!) The coldness of the weather makes us ill and annoyed. We get tired quickly and this leads to the thing that everyone experiences in Winter – whether you like it or not – depression.

Statistics have shown that more people get depressed during Winter than in any other season. As it gets darker quicker, we get more inspired to do SUPER depressing things, like wallowing in bed all day and listening to emo music, maybe even watching sad videos on YouTube, which to be honest, just makes us feel worse. We also get stressed due to Christmas shopping and other preparations. Admit it, we all do this at one point of the year, even if there’s nothing really wrong. This is EXACTLY why we should always try to stay happy and positive no matter what! If you stay with friends, family and loved ones, then you’re sure to be fine!Β Also, be sure to do things YOU like the most, like baking, blogging (me!), writing stories (also me!), reading and photography, for example. Granted, these are all my hobbies, but they are honestly just suggestions of what you COULD do. There’s so much more! Stick to what you like doing best, instead of doing things you wouldn’t normally do, just because you feel forced to be depressed, if that makes sense.

Another thing that happens in Winter is that we get unexplainably hungrier. We eat more junk food and more chocolate. (Girls, mostly!) Our bodies get cold, so in order to warm up, we eat. A lot. Admittedly, I eat a lot anyway. Chocolate is like something I NEED to survive, along with water and food. 😹

Of course, Winter is also a time of happiness. There’s Christmas, (Yayyy!) New Year, snow and my birthday!!Β In fact, here’s a few Winter-inspired pictures I’ve took to cheer y’all up:

Okay, so I know they might not be TOO wintry, but around where I live, you hardly ever get snow! It’s a hard-knock life! (See my little Annie reference in there? *wink, wink!*)

But, as we all know, Christmas is just around the corner, (22 days, people! 22 DAYS!!!) and I just wanted to say something that I’ve noticed recently. As the years pass by, people get less and less excited for Christmas, I swear, and it’s just so sad! You notice that Christmas is less festive and people don’t put decorations up or trees up properly anymore. Everyday, when I travel to and from places, you can see how UNEXCITED people are. I mean, where’s the Christmas spirit gone off to?! People literally used to put up decorations, like, 2 MONTHS before Christmas. It was as if, as soon as Halloween was over, Christmas began. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I just can’t feel it anymore! This may have just burst your bubble, but the spirit is practically gone. However, I’m just gonna celebrate the same as always, because why not?

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, depression. Maybe people aren’t celebrating Christmas the same because of depression? Hey, it could be true! Because of all the darkness, people begin to get dark too. I mean, in English, we moved from reading Romeo and Juliet in Autumn to Macbeth in Winter! MACBETH!! (We’re having one of those Shakespeare years.) But obviously, as over-the-top, cheery teen girls (which I’m guessing whoever reads this is), I guess it’s our job to stay positive ourselves and brighten up the world around us. Give gifts to people even if it’s not a special occasion. Offer to do chores for your mum and dad (I should really follow my own advice. As if!). Just be happy, and hopefully, your brilliantly beautiful aura will affect them too. A friend once told me:

Make today’s vibes SO AWESOME, that yesterday gets jealous.

Actually, she might have just copied that off from Google, but it’s still good advice all the same! Basically, live life how YOU want to live it. Don’t let life win over YOU, YOU win over life!     This is so accurate!
    I know right, we sleep so much in winter – the day gets finished fast because I wake up early (man I am such a bad role model!)
    YESS we get hungrier! Like honestly, me and my siblings have been finishing a biscuit packet faster than normal lol! Not normal hehe

    That’s so true, where I live too has no snow – we don’t get the best winter vibes unfortunately!

    I just realised that this post was written a few months before christmas hehe πŸ˜› Anyways, still applicable to the season my country is currently in! It is winter here and what you described is pretty accurate πŸ˜›
